You may have heard that a panel recently voted unanimously to remove a statue of Thomas Jefferson -that had been there since 1833- from the New York City Council chambers. It was done for the usual stupid reason.
He owned slaves.
We’re way beyond the point of expecting people who claim to be smarter than everybody else to be smart enough not to judge people, who were alive 250 years ago, by 2021 standards. That would get in the way of their political agenda, which appears to be destroying the reputations of the men who founded the country so that they can re-found one that suits their vision of a utopian nanny state.
Republicans have done their duty and spoken out against the stupidity of cancelling the Founders but that’s not enough.
Republicans should get into the statue building business.
When a Thomas Jefferson or George Washington statue is removed, they should be ready with another one to replace it. If not on the public property where it once stood, on private property close by.
An even better idea would be to take a proactive approach and create a proliferation of statues honoring the Founders.
I grew up a stone’s throw away from Jefferson Middle School in Mt. Lebanon, Pa., an affluent, mostly white suburb of Pittsburgh. There is no statue on school grounds. Republicans should start a campaign to raise funds to create one. Let the Democrats protest, if they dare.
Congressman Conor Lamb, a Democrat now running for the Senate in Pennsylvania, grew up down the street from Jefferson School. He claims to be a moderate. Would he have the guts to support a large statue of Jefferson going up in front of the school named after him?
If he did, would his liberal supporters call him a racist?
Better yet, would he have the guts to oppose it?
Could anybody opposed to a new statue justify maintaining the name of the school that’s been there for over 60 years?
Instead of waiting for liberals to attack the Founders by attacking the statues that memorialize them, Republicans should be looking for places to put new ones, while, in the process, educating people about how Jefferson, who was born into slave ownership, helped to create the country that ended slavery.
Defending the honor of the Founders isn’t enough.
Pushing back against Critical Race Theory isn’t enough.
It’s time to re-find the Founders and celebrate them with no apologies. Start looking for places to build new statues, preferably in front of schools named after them.
Initiate fund drives to raise private money. Force school boards to vote on proposals for the new statues. Dare Democrats to oppose them and get them on the record for doing so.
Stop waiting for stupid knee jerk decisions by liberals to remove statues such as the one in New York City before declaring the greatness of Jefferson, Washington and other Founders.
Start a national campaign to re-find the Founders and celebrate them. Speaking out against the removal of the statues isn’t enough. After the Republicans express there anger and frustration, the statues are still gone and the liberals’ point has been made.
Forever
A proactive, national campaign to make the Founders more visible would be accompanied by education that includes a fair assessment of their faults and some much needed context.
Liberals have succeeded in forcing Republicans and conservatives to defend the celebration of the people who created a country because of their 18th Century beliefs about slavery and race. Now, almost 250 years after its founding, tens of thousands of blacks are traveling thousands of miles, risking their lives and living in tents on its borders hoping/begging for a chance to live in it.
It’s time for Republicans to play high powered offense on this issue.
Before it’s too late.
Agreed! However Culture needs guidance and aesthetics. With all politicians and selection committees (un)educated in our K-thru 12 free expression/ therapy curriculum in the arts. I have no faith that they would erect anything better than the virtue signaling brown hunks of metal put up by the progressives. What's worse is we are all supposed to pretend these metal monstrosities are art and moreover pretend they look human. Bad aesthetics is silent, but dangerous.
What role would you like to take in this effort? Let's collaborate.
